We should all try to get ourselves active on a regular basis. It’s one of the most important things we can decide to do with our lives. However, it’s easier said than done, especially when we have no motivation to get started.
However, there are some things we can do to get ourselves started and will help with ongoing motivation to help us along the way. Once we get into the habit and start a regular fitness routine, it continues to become easier and eventually turns into an ongoing piece of our daily lives.
So, if you’re feeling lazy but really want to get out of a sedentary lifestyle, here are some easy ways to get fit – you’ve got this!
1. Workout Through Commercials And Brushing Your Teeth
Getting fit when you haven’t been used to it isn’t going to be easy, and for some of us, we cannot simply jump onto the treadmill and change our lives.
In fact, most experts will tell you that this isn’t sustainable. In order to keep a routine going, you’ll need to have a method that works for you, but more importantly, it needs to be one you can stick to.
If you can keep an exercise routine going, that’s when you’ll see results and start to feel better – later, you can increase it if you want to.
However, before that – you’ll need to think of basic ways to get yourself moving when you’ve been living a bit of a lazy lifestyle. So, if you want to watch TV, no problem – but incorporate a workout routine into it.
Very few people like watching commercials, and we can’t blame them! So, why not do something productive during them?
You can do some squats, push-ups, sit-ups, or maybe even lift dumbbells for a few sets during this time. Once the commercials are over, get back to your show and repeat when they return.
You can also do squats when you are brushing your teeth. These types of basic exercises when you’re somewhat distracted but you have the opportunity can be very effective over time!
2. Don’t Worry About Your Workout Duration
Some people wrongly believe that they can only have a “good” workout if it lasts a long time. However, as we previously mentioned, often times people start with too long of a routine and it’s one they cannot stick to.
Therefore, we recommend that you start slow and keep it sustainable, remembering that consistency is key. If you can only work out for 10 minutes a day to begin with – that’s totally fine.
It’s important that you know that any workout is better than none, and before you know it, you’ll be able to increase the intensity.
3. Run, But Only Throughout Your Favorite Song
If you’ve not run for a while or at all for that matter, you’ll probably struggle to run for any long distances.
Therefore, don’t think about the distance or the time, just run when you have your favorite song on. Whether that’s outside with your earphones in, on a treadmill, or even running in place at home.
Music can give you some inner motivation, and this can be very effective if you do this on a daily basis.
4. A 5 Minute HIIT
HIIT is a type of workout known as high intensity interval training and it’s been suggested as one of the best for weight loss and stamina training.
However, if you’re not ready for a longer workout or you don’t currently have too much time on your hands – why not set yourself a timer for a 5 minute interval.
This may be a 2 minute run, 1 minute walk and another 2 minute run – but it really works!
5. Your Home Is Your Gym
Don’t run before you can walk. Remember, you can do exercises from home which are very effective and if you do this regularly, you can see results.
You can either buy some home gym equipment or simply do some bodyweight exercises when you have the time.
6. Stand Up, Use Your Technology!
Many of us have smartphones and smartwatches which usually have a strong focus on fitness. Some of these technologies have reminder settings which can tell you that you should stand up now and again.
If you use these settings, you’ll end up moving around more without even realizing it! Standing up once an hour can be very effective when you’ve lived a very lazy life for a while.
So, if you want to add a little fun to the equation – consider using your technology to get you moving.
7. 20 Minute Walks
While you may not think it, but walking can be extremely useful to getting yourself more active. It’s almost like a gateway exercise, but it’s also a great way to burn calories.
You can keep a record of your progress through step reports and calories burned by using the same technology as mentioned in the previous point.
Remember, keeping a record of your progress is very important for development when it comes to being active – so always take advantage of apps and technology for things like this.
8. Use The 10 Rule
If you’ve not worked out for a while, you can use the 10 rule to get yourself back to a routine. This is basically where you set yourself 10 “reps” every day of a specific workout and that’s it.
So, let’s say Monday you do 10 push-ups, Tuesday you do 10 sit-ups, etc. These don’t need to necessarily be one after the other, you could do 5 in the morning and 5 in the evening if you want to.
It’s just important that you keep this going and maintain the regularity of it! Over time you’ll see some great results.
9. Don’t Ignore Sleep
Sleep plays a massive role in our daily health, so you need to make sure you’re getting enough quality sleep. Try to avoid staying in bed for too long if you don’t need to be, though.
The easiest way to keep this going is to maintain a journal in which you can record your sleep duration, quality, and general thoughts.
You may notice that the more you’ve been doing basic workouts, you’re getting more quality sleep and this can be huge in the grand scheme of things.
However, Don’t Forget About Your Diet
It’s all well and good doing the above points to try to get you back on track and moving again, but in order to get the best possible results, you need to ensure you’re consuming a healthy diet.
We understand this is more difficult than it sounds, so consider speaking with a nutritionist or your doctor about your options.
And once again, remember that consistency is key – so stick to your diet when you’ve got that solved!
